Skanska Selected by Washington State DOT as Contractor for the I-405, Brickyard to SR 527 Improvement Project in Bothell, Washington

SEATTLE, WA — Skanska, a global construction and development firm, announces it has signed a contract with the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) to expand and make operational improvements to 4.5 miles of the I-405 corridor in Bothell, Washington.

The purpose of the I-405, Brickyard to SR 527 Improvement Project is to expand the dual express toll lane (ETL) system from south of the I-405/SR 522 interchange to the I-405/SR 527 interchange. The project includes new lanes, direct access ramps, interchange improvements, infrastructure in support of Sound Transit’s Stride Bus Rapid Transit program, and new fish passage culverts within the project vicinity. Construction is anticipated to begin in November 2023 and is slated for completion in late 2028.

“Skanska is looking forward to partnering with the Washington State Department of Transportation and Sound Transit to make much-needed multimodal improvements to the I-405 corridor,” said James Bailey, Executive Vice President of Skanska USA Civil’s West Coast operations. “This project will relieve congestion, improve mobility, and increase transit connectivity in an area that needs it most. The broad scope of work will be a challenge, but we are confident that our infrastructure and transportation experience along with our ongoing local partnerships will allow us to get the job done.”

In partnership with Skanska, AECOM serves as the lead designer for the project. In this role, AECOM will provide comprehensive design and engineering services to deliver critical upgrades that address traffic flow; add express toll lane capacity; and make significant improvements for transit riders and carpoolers. AECOM will also be responsible for delivering design services that conform to WSDOT standards while focusing on constructability, minimizing risk, and integrating safety into design.

“AECOM is honored to leverage our more than 30-year track record supporting WSDOT to build a better-connected, accessible road network in Bothell and its surrounding communities,” said Matt Crane, Chief Executive of AECOM’s U.S. West region. “Our local knowledge and extensive experience designing and delivering tolling infrastructure projects make us uniquely positioned to bring this project to life.”
