HWH Breaks Ground on $16M Project for Texas' Prairiland ISD

PATTONVILLE, TX — Harrison, Walker & Harper, LLC (HWH), a construction and industrial services company, recently broke ground on an $11.6 million, 46,000-square-foot indoor multi-purpose facility for the Prairiland Independent School District (ISD) high school campus located in northeast Texas. Prairiland ISD is currently the only school district in Lamar County without an indoor practice facility. Additionally, HWH began construction on a new $5.5 million career and technical education (CTE) center, which will replace the school’s more than 50-year-old agriculture and homemaking buildings. The new Prairiland project will be completed in partnership with architecture and engineering firm Parkhill.

“In partnering with Prairiland ISD again, we will draw on our extensive experience in constructing both state-of-the-art indoor practice facilities and technical education centers to fulfill the district’s vision for its students," said Jared Kinabrew, President of HWH. “Soon, Prairiland ISD students will have access to the latest necessary tools and resources to compete with students nationwide on the field, in the classroom, and in the job market.”

The Prairiland ISD project capitalizes on HWH’s experience in school construction. Over the past 40 years, the firm has completed over 90 school-related construction projects valued at $1.8 billion, including a $21.3 million sports practice facility for Melissa ISD, estimated as Texas’ largest and surpassing college-level and pro facilities at 134,200 square feet.

The new Prairiland ISD multi-purpose building and CTE center construction is funded through a 2022 bond election. The indoor training facility will include a 40-yard turf and end zone, batting cages, boys’ and girls’ locker rooms with showers, a weight room, a training suite with a whirlpool room, new offices for coaches and the athletic director, a laundry room, and various training, uniform, and equipment storage rooms. The facility will house both the athletic department and the school’s band and youth sports programs for practices, games, and performances. It will also be used to host regional and community events.

The over 21,000-square-foot CTE center will feature approximately 17,000 square feet of new learning space, including seven new classrooms and labs with each space dedicated to specific studies or subjects that offer training for careers such as agriculture, floral design, family and consumer sciences, health sciences, and veterinary technology. As part of the new health science education program, students will have access to a simulated hospital room and doctor’s office with related medical equipment. The family and consumer sciences program will include a culinary arts lab, child development classes, and principles of human services labs. The new center’s forthcoming metal shop, wood shop, and greenhouse will serve various specialty study areas.

“At Prairiland ISD, our students are our priority, and we want to equip them with the knowledge and skills for post-graduation success,” said Jeff Ballard, Superintendent of Prairiland ISD. “With their deep understanding of school construction and our market, HWH is the perfect fit to bring to life our vision of a new multi-purpose training facility and CTE center. We’re excited for our students to thrive in a new athletic and academic environment.”
